Wow, does that statistic make you feel like you’ve just been punched in the stomach? That figure comes from The State of Africa’s Children 2008 (PDF), a report published by UNICEF.
With all the bad news that inundates us daily, sometimes we become numb to facts like this one. We mentally file it under: “That’s a shame, but too huge for me to do anything about.” I could have chosen to write about “In 2007, 9.2 million children born alive worldwide die before their fifth birthday.” – another quote from UNICEF, but really… 9.2 million?! That’s such a big number and I’m just one person.
The problem just seems more manageable if we focus on one country, the worst country, Sierra Leone. I’m starting to feel more empowered already. What about you?
Fortunately, Helping Children Worldwide has been focusing for a while now on how to help these children. In 2000, the Child Rescue Centre was founded and now helps 200 children. This wonderful program sprang into action because a handful of people decided to take action rather than allow this injustice to persist.
The GOOD NEWS, is that they got the ball rolling already. All you and I have to do is help accelerate the momentum. It’s really quick and easy:
Hey, while you’re at it, speak up and let us know what you think by commenting on this post.
